We're often asked how we are different from other empowerment sites. How do our services allow for such speedy changes? We are asked why clients are able to achieve shifts with Designed Thinking when they have not been able to get them through other forms of therapy. We welcome these types of questions, especially regarding our phone consultations where we may never have the opportunity to meet the client in person. Let’s start with some simple premises we hold as absolutes.
- Subconsciously there are important reasons a person finds themselves feeling, thinking, or behaving in ways they would never consciously choose.
- Instead of assuming the client is sick or needs to be fixed, we respect where the client is coming from and assist them make more useful choices.
- Even though we do work with clients on the phone, it is important to understand we do not do talk therapy and the techniques and style we use come from the established and proven fields of NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnosis, and Neuro-Semantics.
- What is NeuroLinguistic Programming and Neuro-Semantics? NeuroLinguistic Programming is the science of how the mind takes in data in through the five senses and how this information is processed and communicated though out our neurology. More importantly, it is less about theory and more about how to change the neurological patterns and responses. Neuro-Semantics on the other hand deals with how you make meaning of your feelings and thoughts. This powerful one two punch allows us to assist clients change the structure of their thoughts; thus responses and behaviors.
What is meant by the structure of thought? There's a way your mind and body knows the difference between when it's time to feel good or bad, calm or anxious. All thoughts and experiences must be internally represented in some form or structure. Each of us has some internal combination of images, sounds and feelings we construct to give us different states of mind, all of which can be changed.
Can't these challenges be chemical imbalances? There have been many debates on whether states of minds are based on what you are thinking or result of chemical imbalances in the brain. It actually can be both. Thoughts activate the release of chemicals in the body, just as medication can affect the way we process thoughts. Our subconscious mind controls which chemicals are released in the body, based on your attitude, your focus, your emotional state and what you are thinking. Science is slowly realizing the mind and body operate as a unit, not as separate entities. When your mind is allowed to operate with resourceful emotional responses, you think more clearly and affect a greater influence on your body. When your thoughts are stuck or in disorder, your control center can actually short circuit and behave in ways that make little sense. Fortunately, all thoughts are a process and all processes can be changed.
Do you use hypnosis? In our private one-on-one sessions we may use more conventional hypnosis; however it is not necessary in order to achieve change. We are interested in our clients finding themselves in a relaxed state, a learning state, one where they become open to letting themselves experience different perspectives. We've also have found other techniques can be just or even more effective, it just depends on the person and what they are comfortable with.
Can everyone be hypnotized and is it safe? Some people believe they cannot be hypnotized, but hypnosis is merely a type of trance, an altered state of mind, something we all go in and out of throughout the day. If you've ever watched TV and just stared at the screen, you've been in a mild form of trance. Any time you are angry or hurt, you are in an altered state of mind. One misconception many have is under hypnosis there is a loss of control. The fact of the matter is, there are many frames of mind you can be in, outside your normal frame of mind which actually offer you more in control. At all times, you are the one who decides whether or not to respond to suggestions. Hypnosis is just means of allowing the subconscious mind to achieve an open state of awareness, where old negative thought patterns can more readily be bypassed or changed.
I'm not sure I understand what the subconscious mind actually is. The term merely refers to any thoughts outside conscious awareness. It's important to remember your subconscious mind is in charge of handling all functions vital to your life such as breathing, blood circulation, digestion, memories and of course your emotions. This is why when people are emotionally upset, they may feel a shortness of breath, get an upset stomach, or find it harder to concentrate. Volumes of books have been written on the subject of the subconscious mind, which has been recognized by most medical authorities, though the debate continues on exactly how it works.
What do you do that allows your clients to make rapid changes? All change occurs at a subconscious level. Really, no one would be reading this web page if they could consciously talk themselves out of whatever challenge they've been facing. The subconscious mind is in charge of where our attention is focused; it's the part of you that controls your emotions and thought patterns. Your conscious mind is the part of you operating in the realm of logic and it has little effect on emotionally based challenges.
We work with clients helping the reprogram the patterns they have become accustom to. This is done by releasing negative emotions on past memories, helping rewrite limiting beliefs, getting closure on unresolved issues, shifting perceptions and most importantly allowing the person to find possibilities of choice in their life. Our clients begin to challenge their old ways of thinking and educate themselves on how they can effectively control emotional state as they restructure their thoughts.
Change in people is usually made in one of two ways. Make a future so compelling that you feel drawn to its outcome or releasing the negative emotions surrounding past events; releasing stress and old baggage. We do both, which is what most people require in order to achieve the maximum results. Clients change their beliefs, release limiting decisions, ease old memories, build self-esteem, and install positive resources, all this giving positive results.
How can you do this over the phone? The idea a counselor's physical presence is essential to counseling success is simply unwarranted. In fact, we've discovered we're able to help people over the phone in ways we could never have done in person. Time constraints, traveling fears, social phobias, scheduling conflicts, and family obligations have kept many from seeking assistance. Over the phone they get all the help they need with complete privacy and very little initial effort. Many find it easier to be open in their own familiar settings, making the results much more dynamic.
