Guilt and Shame

Helping Your World Change from the Inside Out

Guilt is the feeling we have done wrong to the environment or others around us. We have violated our own standards.

Shame is the concerned of how others interpret our actions. We believe we have violated their standards or their points of view. We are placing their judgment upon our self.

Both guilt and shame are evaluations of what we believe to be right or wrong. Both severely limit our ability to make proper choices. Unfortunately there are many who cannot envision their life without guilt or shame; they cannot imagine holding their morality without feel bad. This is a shame, since plenty of people uphold high standards without these emotions, therefore they serve little positive purpose.

These emotions typically have their roots in parents, religious institutions or from loved ones. You most certainly are not born with guilt or shame, they are installed; they are learned responses. The intention behind them are often well meaning, however in the long run, they stand in the way of achieving a true pursuit of happiness

Guilt

In the long run guilt and shame impedes our ability to heal; physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally. Those with habitual are more prone to higher incidences of self-criticism and low self-esteem. They force the person into deep reflection which they will tend to pass it on to others in some form of blame. These actions are neither productive nor allow the recipient to become a better person. Guilt and shame are two primary emotions supporting and driving obsessive disorders.
