It has long been understood the mind does not differentiate between what is real and vividly imagined. Meaning negative or unwanted associations created in the mind and accompanied by intense fearful reactions will have the same neurological effect as life threatening experiences
Phobias are fears or discomforts in which the mind has neurologically associated danger to something that is not life threatening. The fear feels real for those experiencing the phobia, their internal signals go to red alert for a perceived danger. It is what makes phobic reactions problematic. Unreasonable neurological associations have become imprinted is being real .
It’s been estimated that 9% of the population has one or more phobias and for approximately 2% of the population, these phobias are severe.
Luckily these imprints are associations between perceived danger and emotional reactions. They are not set in stone, they are not hardwired in and no one is born with a phobia. The mind can and does make new associations, if given the right approaches are taken and applied. These can be done with minimal discomfort.
