Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a reaction to an overwhelming traumatic event. It falls under the category of an anxiety disorder because of the similarity of symptoms. Events that contribute to PTSD are usually quite intense, such as sexual assault, severe auto accident or military combat, though it may occur in people who have witnessed an accident or who have lost a loved one or unexpectedly passed on. There seems to be no time limit on when the symptoms of PTSD take hold. It may be instantaneous or take years after the initial event. Some experience emotional numbness or amnesia related. The symptoms may include emotional withdrawal, anger, hopelessness, moodiness, sleep disorders, mental flashbacks, the inability to concentrate, or an excessive startle response to noise.
The triggering traumatic event usually happens in a
very short time span. Car accidents can occur in a matter of seconds, sexual assault can span minutes or hours, and a battle could last hours or days. It is the emotional impact of the event that cause PTSD. We find it interesting that most
people believe a life-changing event, which may have occurred in a matter of seconds, requires long-term therapy. The mind is not a one way street, if it can change quickly in one direction, it can change quickly in another. At
