We're often asked
how our clients are able to get such rapid shifts. This is a valid question, especially regarding our phone consultations where we may never have the opportunity to meet the client in person. First, it's important to understand that our approach is somewhat different, as it has its roots in the fields of NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP), Hypnosis, and Neuro-Semantics.
What is NeuroLinguistic Programming and Neuro-Semantics?
NeuroLinguistic Programming focuses on how we take in data through our five senses and how this information is processed and communicated though our neurology. More importantly, it is less about theory and more about how to change the patterns of our neurological responses. Neuro-Semantics deals with how we make meaning of our feelings and thoughts. When you change the structure of your thoughts you change your responses and behaviors.
What is meant by the structure of thought?
There's a way your mind and body know the difference between when it's time to feel good or bad, calm or anxious. All thoughts and experiences must be internally represented in some form or structure. Each of us has some internal combination of images, sounds and feelings we construct to give us different states of mind, all of which can be changed.
Can't these challenges be chemical imbalances?
There have been many debates on whether these states of minds are based on your thinking or result from chemical imbalances in your brain. They can actually be both, since the mind and body operate as one unit. Thoughts activate the release of different chemicals in the body, just as medication can affect the way we process thoughts. Our subconscious mind controls which chemicals are released in the body, as well as our different emotional responses. Science is slowly realizing that the mind and body operate as a unit, not as separate entities. When your mind operates free of emotional distractions, you think more clearly and your body operates more efficiently. If your mind is in disorder, your control center can actually short circuit and behave in ways that make little sense. Fortunately, all thoughts are a process and all processes can be changed.
Do you use hypnosis?
In our private one-on-one sessions we may use hypnosis; however, we've found other techniques are often more effective. We may employ hypnotic language patterns over the phone, which will compensate for the distance between us. However, if someone is uncomfortable with that, it will not be used.
Can everyone be hypnotized and is it safe?
Some people believe they cannot be hypnotized, but since hypnosis is merely a type of trance it's something we all go in and out of throughout the day. If you've ever watched TV and just stared at the screen, you've been in a mild form of trance. Another belief is that people under hypnosis lose control of their thoughts. The reality is that you are in complete control at all times and that you are the one to decide whether or not to respond to any suggestions given. However, hypnosis does allow the subconscious mind to achieve a different state of awareness, allowing you to bypass old negative thought patterns.
I'm not sure I understand the subconscious.
These are thoughts outside your conscious awareness. It's important to note that your subconscious handles all your vital functions such as breathing, circulation, and digestion. Your emotions and memories are also handled by the subconscious, so when people are emotionally upset they may feel a shortness of breath, get an upset stomach, or find it harder to concentrate. Complete works have been written on the subject of the subconscious mind, which has been recognized by most medical authorities, though the debate continues on exactly how it works.
What do you do that allows your clients to make rapid changes?
All change occurs at a subconscious level. Really, no one would be reading this web page if they could consciously have talked themselves out of whatever challenge they've been facing. The subconscious mind is where we focus our attention; it's the part of you that controls your emotions and thought patterns. While your conscious mind operates in the realm of logic, it has little effect on emotionally-based challenges.
We work with our clients to release negative emotions surrounding past events, rewrite limiting
beliefs, get closure on unresolved issues, and shift perceptions. We allow our clients to challenge their old ways of thinking and educate them on how they can effectively control their mind and restructure their
thoughts.
Change in people is usually made in one of two ways.
Make a future so compelling that you feel drawn to its outcome, or release the negative emotions surrounding past events. We do both, which what most people require in order to achieve maximum results. We help you challenge your beliefs, release limiting decisions, ease your memories, build your self-esteem, and install positive resources that give you results.
How can you do this over the phone?
The idea a counselor's physical presence is essential to counseling success is simply not true. In fact, we've discovered we're able to help people over the phone in ways we could never have done in person. Time constraints, traveling fears, social phobias, scheduling conflicts, and family obligations have kept many from seeking assistance. By telephone they get all the help they need with complete privacy and very little initial effort. Many people find it easier to be open in their own familiar settings, making the results much more dynamic.
