Changing – how long does it take?
Part 2a
Having the right conditions
One question we are often ask is; "How long will it take for me to get past the obstacles I am currently facing?"
A more appropriate question would be; "What are the necessary conditions that need to exist for my change to occur?"
These would be:
1. You must want to change. This sounds so obvious, but all to often, people cannot image a life with out the challenge
they have had for to long. It is like someone who has spent much of their life in prison, they find it very awkward to be in to society when they are finally free, so they end up finding a way to get back in.
2. You must have the resources or knowledge to the changes. If you cannot find a way to make the change you desire
, then seek assistance.
3. You must have the opportunity to make the change you seek
4. You must have the right attitude to change. If you don't think you can ever change, you probably will not. Always
believe you at least have the opportunity to change, even if you have not yet found a way.
5. You must have the willingness to do whatever it takes to make the change. Not doing so means you are willing to give
up. Giving up is the mind-set of being "hopeless".
Feeling hopeless is nothing more than a conflict between your beliefs and capabilities, the belief that you are not able to
do anything about the situation. Think about how unresourceful this mind-set is. It serves no positive purpose for you. Allow yourself the opportunity that you could just for a moment change your beliefs or expand
your capabilities. Sometimes it is just a matter to step outside of yourself, so you can get a different perspective, just long enough to see if you can see things from a different angle, to listen to
another voice inside, or to get in touch with some other feeling you can like better.
