First steps in overcoming fears and challenges
Part 1B
Confidence and Competence
One of the biggest challenges in transforming your fears (or anything else) is the beliefs you hold.
One misconception people often have is that confidence and competence are some how inter-related, that in order to have confidence you must first possess competence.
Thomas Edison is said to have made 999 unsuccessful light bulbs before he got his first working model.
He never gave up. Imagine how much our lives would be different if he had given up half way through, or at number 998. He did not know exactly how overcome his problem, yet he keeping trying, with the confidence
that he could get past his challenge. His belief was he was competent, yet he had no way of knowing for sure. He did not have the certainty in competence to lighten up your life, yet he did have the confidence that
he would.
When we are faced with irrational emotions, they seem to have upper hand. They whisper for you to give
up and surrender, they want you to feel helpless. Once this happens, you are uncertain of the right decision to make, your confidence diminishes. With out the confidence, you find it difficult to trust the
information of others and in your competence in making the right choices.
We learn from our past experiences. We have all made competent decisions in our past. We have all
experienced confidence in the past. You know what this feels like. Your body does not forget these things. Think of a time where your confidence was at its maximum and see what that feels like. Go ahead and step
right into it and if take a moment, you can notice you have the ability to make changes. When you focus in on the confidence of knowing you could overcome your challenges, then that is a step you can use to get
started right now. The competence will follow.
